MY PLANTED FRESHWATER AQUARIUMS

Two tanks.
A closer look.

From the whole underwater landscape to the smallest shrimp among the leaves. A photographic record of my 5-gallon and 40-gallon aquariums.

David’s 40-gallon planted aquarium with green and red foliage, wood, dark rocks, a terracotta shelter and pale stones
THE WIDE VIEW 40 US gallons

01 / THE COMMUNITY DISPLAY

The 40-gallon

A broad planted landscape with a red-toned center, tall green stems, and low foreground growth. Wood and dark stone give the planting structure; a curved band of pale pebbles draws the eye across the front.

THE SMALLER WORLD 5 US gallons

02 / THE PLANTED CORNER

The 5-gallon

Dense stems fill the left side of this compact aquarium, leaving a lighter window through the center and right. Above, floating plants send long roots into the water; below, small grassy tufts break up the dark substrate.

One detail to notice

The planting extends through the full height of the tank—from the fine foreground growth to the canopy at the surface.

LOOK A LITTLE LONGER

There’s life between the leaves.

The wide photographs reveal the planting and layout. Up close, another set of details appears: a shrimp’s delicate markings, the flash of a neon stripe, or the texture of a single leaf.
